With strikingly bold and subtle palettes, Marilyn League creates modern interpretations of the quilt. Designed more for decoration than function, her quilts easily reach into the realm of fine art. Expressive lines and quirky geometric shapes impart an endearing, child-like quality which is enhanced by seemingly random textures of stitchery. Her playful pieces are balanced by designs of pure abstraction, emphasizing her skills with pattern and color. Despite the feelings provoked, each piece is a tribute to her skill in hand stitchery and fabric design.

Marilyn was drawn to quilting as a way to express her creative thought in a media that had a certain familiarity for her. Having worked with fabrics most of her life, including being a talented dressmaker, Marilyn became serious about quilting in 1998 and quickly added fabric dyeing and surface design to her repertoire. Although she has learned techniques from well known quilters and fiber artists, Marilyn is not afraid to dive into trying out new techniques and skills on her own. "Dyeing fabric to get the colors I want was a big step in improving my work. The teacher who had the biggest influence on my artwork is David Walker. The classes I took with him really propelled me towards using abstract imagery in my work."

As an active member of MACA for the past decade, she was a motivating president at a pivotal point in MACA's recent history. She served as president again in 2011 to keep that positive momentum going. "I joined MACA because I wanted to develop friendships with other artists. I have succeeded in that. I now know, respect and admire many artists in this area."

Marilyn is also involved with the Studio Art Quilters Associates, Uncommon Threads Quilt Guild and the Memphis Sewing Guild. She also dabbles with paper and mixed media and is a big fan of Artist Trading Cards. Examples of her work, as well as her adventures in home remodeling, can often be seen on her blog, sadfugeeface.blogspot.com.
