Agnes Stark creates functional pottery with a decorative flair. She pays fine attention to everyday objects, adding her own bits of style in her edge work and handles and finishing it all with painterly bursts of earthy colors. Each piece, although built with function in mind, easily stands alone as a work of art.
With an early position as an assistant designer at the Front Street Theatre, art and design were always in her repertoire. Agnes started working in clay in
1965, studying ceramics at the Memphis College of Art and was immediately hooked on the media. She went on to work on her Masters of Art at LSU, and took countless workshops to enhance her skills. Her influences come from instructors throughout her education, starting with ceramicist Thorn Edwards.
Agnes is one of the founding members of MACA, and has been a strong force in its growth over the years. She has held numerous positions in governing both MACA and its parent organization, TACA. Her favorite thing about being involved is the fellowship with other artists, and would love to see more great programs for MACA members in the future.
Also involved in Artist Link and the Memphis Potters Guild, Agnes has been its past president for a total of eighteen years.
Sought after by many collectors of her work, Agnes loves to show her work as much as possible, and can always be seen in the Memphis Potters Guild shows, various fine craft shows around the Memphis area, and through viewings in her own studio.
